Gloss is one of the items in appearance inspection. Appearance inspection is a method to quantify the surface characteristics we observe. Independent evaluation of appearance ensures consistency in the appearance of manufactured products, regardless of when, where they are produced or coated.
Gloss is the ability of a surface to reflect a non-dispersed beam of light. By emitting a beam of constant energy at a specific angle onto the measured surface and measuring the amount of reflected light, the gloss of a sample can be determined. Different surfaces require different reflection angles. Gloss meters cover the necessary measurement range, from high gloss to low gloss.

A gloss meter is an instrument used to measure the specular reflection gloss of a surface. It is suitable for measuring the gloss of materials such as ink, paint, baking paint, coatings, wood products, architectural decorative materials, marble, granite, glazed polished tiles, ceramic tiles, plastics, paper, and other non-metallic surfaces.

Gloss meters come with various measurement angles. Typically, 20° is used for high-gloss materials, 60° for medium-gloss materials, and 85° for low-gloss materials. Additionally, two other angles are used for specific materials: 45° is specifically for measuring the gloss of ceramics, films, textiles, and anodized aluminum, while 75° is dedicated to measuring the gloss of paper and printing materials.
